Junior Achievement of New Mexico recognizes the complexity of the challenges confronting Native American youth and believes that education, early intervention and a united community effort are prerequisites for providing a vision for Native American children that will allow them to grow into productive, successful adults. To this end, JA of New Mexico is poised to launch the JA Native American Initiative – a powerful project that provides a vehicle for motivating and preparing Native American youth for lifelong success. The JA Native American Initiative identifies and addresses specific challenges confronting Native American youth and their families:
- Economic challenges
- Cultural barriers
- Language barriers
This life-changing initiative will offer Native American children in New Mexico the hope of a brighter tomorrow by preparing them for the world of work and giving them the tools to succeed in today's global economy. JA of New Mexico is passionately committed to a statewide rollout of the JA Native American Initiative to ensure that the benefits of this powerful program accrue to Native American children across the state. The JA Native American Initiative will offer programs to students in K-12. The JA curricula provide relevant and age-appropriate lessons to students at each grade level. Using concepts and ideas students can relate to, lessons are embedded within the traditional JA curricula and cover a variety of important topics targeted specifically to Native American youth. Specific program enhancements include:
- Selected traditional JA curriculum delivered by a Native American volunteer
- Volunteer Role Models
- Parental & Community Outreach
- Program Enhancements to be considered, but not limited to
- Training video
- Parent video
- Role model video
- Take home game supporting class instruction
